Images of Ancient and Historical Philosophers in the Book (Chapter 1)

  1. Pthahotep, whose writings in 2500 BCE included a consideration of character.
  2. Theophrastus, who took over from Aristotle and studied types of personality.
  3. Thomas Hobbes who was responsible for initiating the narrative “we are all equal.”
  4. A teacher of yoga. Although Hindu and Buddhist traditions teach that we share a universal inner communality, they also recognize differences in their students, and that different students could learn best from different regimens of teaching.
