Places in the Book

In addition to being about personalities, and many specific people, the book “Personal Intelligence” also recounts stories that include a variety of places and objects. Here are some of those places featured in the book (with a few people included as well).

  1. The Residential College, where I studied at the University of Michigan. Modeled on the houses at Cambridge, Harvard and Yale, it was an intense environment for learning.
  2. The North Campus Coops, where I moved in my junior year to find a quieter environment
  3. Dustin Pedroia at Arizona State
  4. The Clubhouse and Doctor’s Office of Coalwood, West Virginia, near where Homer Hickam spent his childhood—and blew up his mother’s cherished white picket fence. For more pictures of Coalwood, see these pages.
  5. Kirkland Hall of Yale University, home to the Yale Department of Psychology. Robert Abelson thought about story-understanding there, and formulated his analysis of correlation coefficients there. Professor Peter Salovey and I did a good deal of our work on emotional intelligence there as well.
  6. Linda Greenlaw’s boat, the Hannah Boden, which she sailed from Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts, encouraging herself forward while a part of her wanted to turn back.
  7. Karntnertortheater of Vienna, where Beethoven performed the Ninth Symphony for the public and the Austrian royalty.
  8. Paintings of Robert Henri courtesy of www.henrirobert.org. See also this slideshow on the same site.
  9. Cape Canaveral, Florida, where the United States set up its space program.
  10. The Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California. Its founders hoped to explore inner space.
